Calm Anxiety Using Your Breath

Dear Breathers,

I have been asked by the wonderful people at Triyoga to talk a bit about stress.

I wanted to give you something that you can take away with you and use now, something you can really count on. This breathing technique has proven benefits and comes from the HeartMath Institute from California who have been studying about heart intelligence and have come up with a term call heart coherence. The breath pattern I want to show you is called the coherence breath and it’s really simple, it’s not technical you don’t need to remember much, it’s just five seconds on the inhale and five seconds on the exhale, do it for five minutes, three time a day if you can, which means first thing in the morning and last thing at night and then before your main meal of the day.

It looks like this –

Inhale 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Exhale 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

And this is all there is to it! I can be a bit tricky in terms of getting the pattern, though it sounds very simple, it does take some reminding initially. So here I have made a downloadable audio, simply enter your email below and we will send that to you. This is a ten-minute recording and we do it for ten minutes initially so you can really embody it. You will find yourself getting out of rhythm frequently, so initially, it really helps to have a guide, while your body and mind gets used to the practice and allows it to happen.

Now here is the science bit, this breath puts you in harmony with the sixty cycles that is happening in the world around you, because sixty cycles or sixty thousand hertz is a multiple for six times per minute and if you breathe in and out five and five that, take ten so this is six times per minute.

It’s a very powerful breath and you will find that after two-three days you will be feeling something different about the way you view things and the way you approach the world. Even more importantly those times you start seeing the first signals of anxiety or rising tension you will remember that you have a place to go with this, there is something you’ve got and you will start to go there and find it will help you exactly as you need it.
